EUROPEAN MARKED WHITE SOCIETY

SOCIETY FINCHES

The Bengalese Finch, Lonchura domestica

In the US they are known as Society Finches, perhaps because of their reputation for being so very sociable, to a meddlesome degree. To others across the globe they are known as Bengalese Finches, and to Germans they are known Japanese Mövchen Finches, and there are no doubt many other names for this very special of finches! While there are names but there is only one very unique bird, the Society Finch can claim something no other finch can thus far, it exist only in captivity. It has never existed in a wild state anywhere on the planet. It is a completely man made finch, domesticated many centuries. The first Society Finches were bred in the Orient, probably Japan. Their captivity date back so long ago, that their true ancestry or beginnings have always been controversial. However, many authorities no believe the Asian Striated and Sharptail Manakins are direct ancestors. These wild, seldom seen Manakins are essentially identical to the Chocolate Self Society Finch. Regardless, the Society is one of the most enjoyable and easiest finches to keep and bred. Every fancier who tries them will come to realize the true value of this marvelous finch.

At present I am happy to say that I have what I think is the most complete collection of Society Finch varieties available in the US. You'll not find more Society Finches anywhere under one roof.

But, don't ask for any of the European Societies just yet, they have proven to be difficult to breed and are not at all like the domectic Societies. I have had Black Browns, Black Greys and Red Browns going on 2 years now and the production is slow. Many infertile eggs and generally poor parents, which means I have to often foster the Euro birds under regular societies to succeed as raising them. But they are SPECTACULAR birds, Just take a look at this Black Grey, they are very large, very dark and have an over all superb shape and appearance. With any luck I might have some Black Browns and Black Greys to offer later this year. Red Browns are slower and it may be a while longer before any of these are offered. Sometimes I wish the Euros never were created because they are so different from regular society finches. I'd be thrilled with just the Japanese Societies as they are exceptionally nice birds and breed freely. However I am going to continue to work with them and see what happens.

I don't breed Societies in large quantities, so if you are looking for a large number of birds to set up as foster parents or whatever, I seriously doubt that I could help you. I dont have dozens to offer and never have hundreds to offer. Small orders are welcome as my interest are mainly in unusual colors and nice birds for showing. Feel free to ask me questions about these great birds Garrie Landry Look at the Pearl Society, a totally new mutation !
